Chinese nationals abroad buying, sending medicines to help people in China amid Covid scare

Overseas Chinese nationals are buying and sending medicines to help people in China amid the massive surge in Covid cases after lifting of restrictions.

The Covid situation in China has worsened after a massive spike in cases as the country lifted its zero Covid policy this month. Chinese nationals living abroad are buying and sending medicines to their loved ones back home amid this massive Covid surge.

In the past few days, we have seen numerous reports and first-hand admissions by Chinese people stocking up important medicines and drugs that could possibly help those affected by Covid and shipping them to their relatives and friends inside China. These couriers have been sent from Singapore, Malaysia and even Australia

China's domestic vaccines have always had a low success rate in combating the Omicron variants. Secondly, China is seeing a lot of its elderly fall prey to this latest wave simply owing to a lack of vaccine coverage.

This may lead to a situation like what Hong Kong saw at its peak with its elderly population affected the most by Covid. The long-drawn-out lockdowns and shutdowns have also made sure not to cement the condition of herd immunity in its population, which is coming out from early studies based on Chinese patients.

How are overseas Chinese nationals helping those inside China?

Singapore is one of the best test cases to judge the sentiments in China owing to the proximity between Singapore and China in terms of trade, tourism, and ethnic relations. Now we gather that many Chinese families living in Singapore are shipping essential medicines to their loved ones in China owing to a lack of stocks. Reports show that anxious relatives in Singapore are waiting for long periods to procure medicines and then courier them to addresses in China.Seeing this, Singapore's Ministry of Health (MOH) has advised the public to buy medicines for their own use only. The major drugs being shipped from Singapore to China include the painkiller Panadol (Paracetamol), the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) Lianhua Qingwen and other Vitamin C supplements.
